Lightning Elimination Solutions

Although Benjamin Franklin understood some properties of lightning more than 250 years ago, there are still aspects about how lightning forms that elude scientists to this day. Thus, it is not possible to design a lightning protection system that serves as an actual lightning eliminator. Lightning protection systems can, however, successfully capture the energy of a lightning strike and safely direct that energy to ground.

So while true lightning eliminators aren’t feasible, the technology has advanced such that traditional lightning rods will be the most conductively attractive to downward leaders (branches of lightning that originate in thunderclouds). The most advanced lightning protection technologies manipulate the electrostatic field present during thunderstorms to intercept downward leaders or minimize the formation of upward streamers.

What kind of system implementation will you need? The best solutions for effective lightning protection are unique to every client, beginning with an extensive evaluation of each site to assess its particular vulnerabilities. Lightning Elimination Systems’ solutions include building lightning protection systems with either lightning rods, early streamer emission terminals or dissipaters; surge suppression; and grounding  systems. Our experience extends to having these systems comply with relevant industry-specific  standards and electrical codes as well as performing any mandated testing and  maintenance.

We follow a five-step assessment and design process when devising a lightning protection system:

1. Ensuring the safety of people and animals.

2. Capturing the lightning strike.

3. Providing a low-impedance path to ground.

4. Protecting the main power and downline distribution panels.

5. Providing suppression on all incoming low voltage/data/telcom circuits.
